Be prepared to face the digital tech woes

PORT MORESBY: The internet penetration in Papua New Guinea is expected to surge rapidly when the country’s 4G infrastructure is ready for nationwide connections next year.

The sea optic fibre cables are expected to reduce the public cost to access the internet significantly, making it more affordable to every Papua New Guinean.

Papua New Guineans will not only benefit in faster and more efficient access to information and knowledge, the country’s business and economic transactions and activities are also expected to be boosted.

However, the Information Communications Technology (ICT) breakthrough for Papua New Guineans will also come with frustrating teething problems.

Commissioned by Wiztek, an online mobile and tech support company, the online survey of 2,000 participants showed that many people, at some point, lost their patience with their tech devices.

The biggest annoying issue faced by the participants is “slow Internet”, followed by “slow computer” and “pop-up ads”. Those surveyed are also annoyed by paper jams in printers, and would generally start getting annoyed after spending about 12 minutes fixing technical problems.

A third of the participants admit that out of sheer frustration, sometimes they opt to purchase completely new devices instead of fixing the old ones. One in five of those surveyed also claimed to have had a fall out with their partner as a result of a broken tech device.

Over 45% of the participants admit that they’re not IT savvy, and three in 10 say that they have made the problem worse by trying to fix the issue themselves. About 25% of them have lost important files and documents as a result of a tech issue.
