News that matter in Papua New Guinea Flashback file pic Court orders Pang’s presence in court for rape committal PORT MORESBY:  A committal court in Waigani has refused Sanctuary Hotel Operations Manager Jamie Pang’s submission through his lawyer to remain silent in his declaration statement and ordered him to appear in court today (June 30, 2022). Pang’s lawyer Phillip Tabuchi informed the court yesterday (June 29, 2022) that Pang decided not to make any statement regarding the ruling on evidence against his rape charge and wanted it to proceed to the National Court. Magistrate Paul Puri Nii said the declaration statement should be made with Pang’s presence in court. Police prosecutor Christian Iga told committal court magistrate Paul Puri Nii that “we are only waiting for the deceased’s medical report (autopsy) report”. “We ask the court to adjourn hearing for two weeks for us to get Dr Seth Fose to sign the report. We will bring the report to Kerema for the doctor to sign before it is presented to court,”   he said. News that matter in Papua New Guinea Wabag candidate Milfred Wangatau nabbed for murder PORT MORESBY:  Papua New Guineans are going to the polls from Monday to July 22 and one candidate, Milfred Wangatau (Independent – Wabag), is already in the soup. Wangatau was arrested and charged with murder on Monday (June 27, 2022), Enga commander Chief Inspector George Kakas said. Kakas said an election campaign supporters was shot dead and another injured in a fight between Wangatau’s men and Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Dr Lino Tom,’s supporters. “We have seized a gun, belonging to Wangatau, and we are conducting ballistic test to determine the shot that killed the election campaign supporter,” he added. Baby-sitter stands by her testimony against Bhosip Kaiwi PORT MORESBY:  Bhosip Kaiw’s lawyer Emmanuel Ellison told State witness Rachel Ipang, the baby-sitter and Jenelyn Kennedy’s best friend, that she had lied in her two statements to police. “You said when you went into the room, you saw pliers, screw drivers and kitchen knife, and some clothes with blood stains. That mens you lied in your to police on June 24, 2020, saying that you saw blood stains on the pliers, screw drivers and kitchen knife,” Ellison told Ipang. News that matter in Papua New Guinea Judge stops state lawyer’s bid to ban media coverage of Bhosip Kaiwi’s murder case PORT MORESBY:  A state lawyer made a shocking bid to stop the media ( The National ) from reporting the ongoing Bhosip Kaiwi murder case in the National Court yesterday (June 28, 2022). However, in the interest of press freedom, Acting Judge Laura Wawun-Kuvi denied Elizabeth Kave’s bid and told her to provide relevant provisions (if any) on which she was basing her concern over The National’s coverage yesterday (June 28, 2022) of Monday (June 27, 2022) proceedings on Kaiwi’s murder trial. Elizabeth said while the State understood that the media had the right to publish the court proceedings, the concern was that the prosecution still had more witnesses to call, and the trial had just started.
