PORT MORESBY: The National Capital District Health
Authority has shocked everyone by closing down Rita Flynn Coronavirus
(Covid-19) Centre, ceasing all public health activities and operations.
The decision was made
based on money or the lack of funds! It looks like the NCD is giving priority
to money than maintaining and ensuring public health!
National Pandemic
Response Deputy Controller Dr Daoni Esorom has warned that the Covid-19
services in NCD (Port Moresby) must continue as a surge was expected due to
General Election 2022 (GE22) activities.
He said NCD closed the
centre because of the K6.2 million owed to the PNG Sports Foundation for the
use of Rita Flynn and other facilities it owned.

National Pandemic Response deputy controller Dr Daoni Esorom sounded the
warning yesterday after announcement of the closure of the Rita Flynn Covid-19
centre, and the ceasing of all Covid-19 activities there by the National
Capital District Health Authority.
He said this was because of the K6.2 million owed to the PNG Sports Foundation
for the use of Rita Flynn and other facilities it owned.
Esorom said the chief executive officers of the NCD Health Authority and the
Sports Foundation were told last week to open Rita Flynn while they tried to
arrange funding from the Health Department.
Dr Esorom said the country was expecting a Covid-19 surge and warned people to
follow safety health measures during the GE22.
“I have discussed with the NCD Health Authority team to decentralise these
Covid-19 centre to other health facilities in the city,” he said.
“However, I was informed that Health Department had not transferred the
financial powers to the NCD Health Authority chief executive officer since it
was set up in February, 2020.”
He was also told that the Health Department had not transferred the health
service improvement programme of between K12 million and K13 million to the
health authority for the Covid-19 and other public health, clinical,
administrative and management activities.
“These non-transferred funds have accumulated since February 2020,” he said.
He said public health programmes for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria and
Tuberculosis had also been affected by the lack of funding.
