SOUTHERN Highlands regional candidate Philemon Embel (People’s National Congress) escaped an assassination attempt on his life yesterday morning.
A shot was fired and the bullet hit Embel’s car door.
It is believed that the gunman had retaliated after his car and other vehicles in a convoy were damaged on Wednesday.
Embel was cruising along Nipa-Kutubu’s Parita junction when the gunman fired the shot.
Embel rushed to Mendi to lodge a police report.

Later, he gathered his supporters in front of the police station and briefed them on the incident.
The gunman’s vehicle was damaged on Wednesday afternoon while he was returning from a gathering in Topua village where Southern Highlands Governor William Powi was presented some pigs in the morning.
Powi said he drove without any escort as it was his father’s village and arrived at Topua village in the Nembi-Plateau to meet with the people.
He said the vehicles that were damaged belonged to people from other districts who came to witness the programme where 20 pigs and three cassowaries were presented to him, and he had dinner with them before leaving at 6pm.
Attempts to get police comments were unsuccessful.

Review of Hagen Open RO appointment set for next week

THE matter between former acting Hagen Open returning officer Amose Noifa and Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai reviewing Willie Ropa’s reappointment will return to court next week.
Justice Joseph Yagi at the Waigani National Court yesterday set the matter to be heard on Wednesday as Sinai had filed a notice of motion to stay the proceeding and Ropa had also applied to intervene.
“This is to allow the parties to serve each other with the necessary documents in relation to the proceeding and to obtain directions from their clients,” he said.
Justice Yagi then ordered Ropa’s lawyer Andrew Kuria to withdraw the notice of motion with the application to intervene, saying the motion should not be filed before a leave was granted to join.
“You are granted leave to withdraw your motion and refile it after leave is granted for you to become a party in the matter,” he said.
Noifa’s lawyer Emmanuel Isaac suggested that the matter return today for hearing, saying that there were discussions between the parties about the matter.
“I am suggesting this because the parties may have resolve to a conclusion and the only way to find out is to come to the court and see if we have obtained some instructions between that time,” Isaac said.
Solicitor-General Tauvasa Tanuvasa, representing the State, argued that there would be an issue of short service if the matter returned today.
Tanuvasa said Niningi remained with his decision not to object Noifa’s application to review Sinai’s decision because appointment and reappointment of ROs was in Sinai’s capacity as EC.
Sinai’s lawyer Lasen Tangua said they had filed a motion to stay the proceeding because there was another related matter incumbent Hagen MP William Duma had filed against Sinai in relation to the same case which went to the court and was still pending.
