Milne Bay mastermind pirate Tiutiu arrested

PORT MORESBY: The mastermind of piracy in Milne Bay was arrested when police raided his hideout in Esa’ala on Tuesday (Jan 28, 2020).
The pirate, who has links with the notorious robber-killer Tommy Maeva Baker and Michael Yawi Mekere, is a.k.a Tiutiu or One-eyed-Jack.
Tiutiu had escaped from Giligili Prison outside Alotau about two years ago and Milne Bay saw a rise in piracy since then.
The National reported details of the arrest:

Feared suspect arrested

National
By CLIFFORD FAIPARIKPOLICE have arrested the most-wanted and feared suspect accused of masterminding pirate incidents in Milne Bay, acting Southern Command police commander Chief Supt John Maru says.
“This famous suspect known as Tiutiu or one-eye jack is also (allegedly) the main organiser of violent crimes carried out by Milne Bay’s notorious criminals Tommy Maeva Baker and Michael Yawi Mekere,” he said. “He makes arrangements for Baker and Mekere to move around the seas of Milne Bay to carry out their criminal activities.”
Chief Supt Maru said the suspect was arrested when police raided his hideout in Esa’ala, last Tuesday.
“He has been involved in all the piracy in the seas of the province where he held up passengers travelling by boats and dinghies and robbing them off their valuables.
“When police conduct investigation into piracy incidences, all the victims always identified this one-eye jack suspect.”
Chief Supt Maru said the suspect escaped from Giligili Prison, outside Alotau, about two years ago while awaiting trial for alleged violent criminal activities such as armed robbery, rape and murder.
“And there was a surge of piracy incidences since he was on the run, of which the latest (alleged) incident was on Jan 16, at Esa’ala.
Maru said the latest piracy before he was arrested was about 50m offshore the Bunama village in the Duau local level government area where he (allegedly) held up a dinghy and escaped with passengers’ valuables.
“And upon tip-off, members of the Southern command taskforce raided his hideout and arrested him. He was also in possession of a firearm, ammunition and mask. He is now being detained at the Alotau Police Station and undergoing investigation.”
