ACP arrested for allegedly causing grievous bodily harm

PORT MORESBY: An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) was arrested on Monday (Feb 24) for allegedly committing four criminal offences, including causing grievous bodily harm.
ACP Benjamin Turi was locked up by Boroko police but later released on K1,000 bail.

A SENIOR police officer was yesterday arrested on four allegations, including causing grievous bodily harm, by the Boroko Criminal Investigation Division (CID) police and was locked up but later released on a K1,000 police bail.
Deputy commander Highlands Eastern End Assist Comm of Police (ACP) Benjamin Turi, a former National Capital District Met Supt, allegedly faces four criminal charges – using force to make an immigration officer follow his instruction, causing grievous bodily harm, unlawful detention and abuse of office.
The offences were allegedly committed on June 16, 2016 when he was based in Port Moresby.
According to police, he went to Gerehu Lodge in search of an escapee who was in custody of immigration officers.
The escapee was a Malaysian who was with immigration officers at the lodge. ACP Turi and his policemen picked him up and drove to the Gerehu Police Station. It was alleged that in the course of arresting the Malaysian, three accompanying migration officers were assaulted by the policemen.
One of the immigration officers was detained at the station cell with injuries that he had sustained.
