Incumbents continue to be beaten as Independents and parties booked their seats in Parliament. Another Independent wins in Menyamya, toppling Pangu’s incumbent

  News that matter in Papua New Guinea Another Independent wins in Menyamya, toppling Pangu’s incumbent PORT MORESBY:  The People’s National Congress (PNC) Menyamya incumbent Benjamin Philip, who switched to Pangu Pati in General Election 2022 (GE22), was rejected by voters. Philip was eliminated during the vote count and the seat was won by an Independent, Solen Loifa, who polled 18,397 votes to edge out runner-up Jackty Yatipo of PNC. Philip is the second Independent candidate to win in GE22. The first was newly-elected East New Britain Governor Michael Marum (PNG’s rugby league great) who beat the incumbent, Nakikus Konga (People’s Progress Party) who did badly and was eliminated during the ballot count. The progressive results of winners is also showing a growing number of parties winning at least one seat each. News that matter in Papua New Guinea EC Sinai must use power, says Judge PORT MORESBY:  Judge Joseph Yagi says Papua New Guinea (PNG) Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai should deal with General Election 2022 (GE22) officials disobeying his instructions which are raising issues in court. “Sinai has the power to deal with officials who are arrogant and refuse to follow (his) instructions. These are issues within his powers and the longer he delays to act raises the facts of the proceeding,” he added. News that matter in Papua New Guinea Judge cautions Governor Peter Yama PORT MORESBY:  Judge Joseph Yagi says it is an abuse of process if available avenues are not utilised. He made the remarks regarding Madang Governor Peter Yama’s matter seeking to define the role of police during general elections (GEs). Yama’s lawyer told the National Court that policemen involved in election process in Madang had allegedly threatened Yama’s polling officials and scrutineers. He said this may affect the outcome of election as counting was ongoing. Judge Yagi said this was criminal conduct and a formal complaint needed to be laid and have the policemen arrested and charged. More parties win a seat each, including an Independent

  News that matter in Papua New Guinea More parties win a seat each, including an Independent PORT MORESBY:  More political parties, including an Independent, have won seats in Papua New Guinea (PNG)’s General Election 2022 (GE22). Those who have won a seat each are People’s Progress Party (PPP), People First Part, United Labour Party, National Alliance, Liberal Party and Triumph Heritage Empowerment. The Independent candidate who won was former PNG   rugby league great and national player Michael Marum. He is now East New Britain governor. The incumbent, Nakikus Konga (PPP) did badly and was eliminated during the ballot count. The ruling Pangu Pati is still leading in the progressive confirmed GE22 winners with nine seats, trailed by People’s National Congress   with six.
