Another Independent wins in Menyamya, toppling Pangu’s incumbent

PORT MORESBY: The People’s National Congress (PNC) Menyamya incumbent Benjamin Philip, who switched to Pangu Pati in General Election 2022 (GE22), was rejected by voters.

Philip was eliminated during the vote count and the seat was won by an Independent, Solen Loifa, who polled 18,397 votes to edge out runner-up Jackty Yatipo of PNC.

Philip is the second Independent candidate to win in GE22. The first was newly-elected East New Britain Governor Michael Marum (PNG’s rugby league great) who beat the incumbent, Nakikus Konga (People’s Progress Party) who did badly and was eliminated during the ballot count.

The progressive results of winners is also showing a growing number of parties winning at least one seat each.

Pangu Pati still leads with 10 seats, trailed by PNC with six and United Resources Party four.
