THE Wapenamanda Airport in Enga was closed on Friday after oil and broken bottles were strewn over sections of the runway overnight Thursday, according to the National Airports Corporation (NAC).
NAC managing director and chief executive officer Rex Kiponge strongly condemned the vandalism.
“I am very disappointed and condemn in the strongest term this incident caused by a few people who are holding the rest of the travelling public at ransom because of their senseless actions,” he said.
NAC issued a notice to airmen of airline operators on Friday morning not to fly into Wapenamanda.
Kiponge said NAC and police conducted an investigation, including an assessment of the damage caused.
“Again, this is a breach of the civil aviation laws and a criminal offence and NAC will not tolerate this behaviour.
I appeal to the people of Wapenamanda to work with NAC and the police to identify those perpetrators and hand them over to police,” Kiponge said.
Just last month, a similar incident occurred at Mt Hagen’s Kagamuga Airport where perpetrators spilled oil on the runway.
