Tortured, left to die
A WOMAN suffering from disability has been rescued by police after she was badly beaten up and left to die in a home in Port Moresby.
Officers from the Family and Sexual Violence Unit (FSVU) said they rescued the paraplegic woman who, after three weeks of torture, managed to crawl out of the house and flag down a taxi.
She told police she was beaten up and kept inside the home at Five-Mile for three weeks, but managed to escape by crawling out of the house on Tuesday night.
“She crawled to the roadside, flagged down a cab and was dropped off at Makana in Nine-Mile,” a police statement said.
“Someone found the woman sleeping on the roadside and contacted the police emergency number 1800-100.”
Members of the FSVU brought her to the Boroko police station yesterday.
Chief Insp Delilah Sandeka, the director of the FSVU at the police station, said they were contacting some partner agencies to provide the woman accommodation and care while the matter was investigated.
A pastor was also called in to the station to provide her counselling.
Police said they condemned the violence and appealled to communities to respect the rights of women and girls.
Contact 1800-100 to report such crime.
