Alleged rapist denied bail

A 35-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly tried to rape two six-year-old schoolgirls and then forced them to swallow his sperm was denied bail by the Hagen Committal Court yesterday.
James Polka Lus also threatened the girls with a bush knife.
In reading out the police files, magistrate Betty Jacob said the two girls from Gia Village in Tambul/Nebilyer were walking to school between 8am and 9am on March 20 when Lus forced the girls into a roadside bush.
Lus allegedly ordered the girls to remove their clothes, lie on the ground and tried to rape them.
When he failed, as the girls were too young, Lus forced the girls to perform oral sex on him and then ordered them to swallow his sperm.
Lus was arrested and charged with sexual offence and crime against children under section 229 (D) (1) of the Criminal Code Act.
Prosecutor Paul Urangian informed Jacob that police files were not ready and asked for more time to complete investigations.
He said the investigating officers were away attending a former colleague’s funeral.
“Lus’ behaviour is unlike that of a human being,” Urangian said, asking the court not to grant bail to Lus.
Jacob said the committal court did not have the power to grant him bail but, he could apply for bail in the national court.
She adjourned the case to June 28 for police to tender the files.

Church deacon arrested, charged with rape of girl, 7

MANUS police have arrested and charged a Seventh Day Adventist Church deacon with allegedly raping a girl since she was seven.
Manus police commander Chief Insp David Yapu said George Avou Mwaki, 56, from Rei Village of Lou Island in Balopa, was arrested and charged after the girl’s mother found out about the sexual assaults.
He said Mwaki allegedly raped the girl, now 12, on several occasions between February and April 2014 until the mother lodged a police report.
Police investigations then discovered that Mwaki had allegedly started raping the girl when she was only seven years old.
Mwaki is now in police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Lorengau Committal Court tomorrow.
Yapu said the alleged rapes by a church elder was against church principles and it also tarnished the image of the church.
“Church elders or leaders are supposed to work closely with police to help address socio, law and order issues in communities,” he added.
He said church workers like pastors, deacons, priests and bishops should lead by example and practice what they preached.
