Suspension of cops a step in the right direction for RPNGC
PORT MORESBY: The suspension of two police constables and a corporal for assaulting two people in the Gerehu Hospital last week shows the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC)’s top cops are serious in ensuring discipline.
It is a step in the right direction to restore public confidence in the police force and to ensure that the men in blue really serve the people and country with distinction.
Metropolitan Commander Supt Gideon Ikumu was quoted by The National as saying: “You wear the uniform to serve, not to frighten and fight people.
“I have had enough of such men who think they can act like how you three acted.”

TWO police constables and a corporal were suspended and charged with assaulting two people in the Gerehu Hospital that caused a scale down of medical operations last week.
The trio, from two different Fox Units from two zones, were each charged with one count of causing grievous bodily harm, and one count each of assault causing occasional bodily harm.
Metropolitan Commander Supt Gideon Ikumu said the charging of the three policemen was the start of what the National Capital District (NCD) Command was implementing against policemen who continued to be indisciplined and misuse their uniform.
He told the three policemen that the attitude they displayed was not what the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary was about.
“When we were in Bomana Police College, we were taught to protect and serve, instead we have men who continue to act way above their rank and think they own the (police) force.
“You wear the uniform to serve, not to frighten and fight people.
“I have had enough of such men who think they can act like how you three acted,” Supt Ikumu remarked.
“Your actions go against the code of ethics of the force, enough is enough and I speak on behalf of the NCD Command that this is the start of a very long process for all three of you.
“You will be dealt with by the law but from the police you three will be suspended pending the investigations,” he added.
Last week, NCD Health Authority acting chief executive officer Ken Wai told The National that it was unfortunate that police had assaulted people in hospital premises.
“Our innocent staff and patients were unnecessarily intimidated and assaulted.
“There were no major injuries but one security guard suffered a broken hand.
“Policemen and women must protect us as we are all serving our people from our respective sectors.
“The rogue policemen were still around the hospital but they fled when the Metropolitan Superintendent arrived,” he added.
Supt Ikumu said the incident involved an off duty policeman.
“A motor vehicle theft suspect was brought to the hospital and the off duty policeman was insisting that the hospital staff attended quickly to the suspect.
