Magistrate on the run!
News that matter in Papua New Guinea
PORT MORESBY: A magistrate is on the run as police hunt for more suspects in connection with an ongoing probe on the misappropriation of Madang’s treasury funds.
The National quoted Northern Region police commander Asst Comm of Police (ACP) Peter Guinness as saying the magistrate was among several more suspects to be arrested this year.
He said a warrant of arrest was issued for the magistrate but the magistrate had gone into hiding.
So, a magistrate who is supposed to uphold the law has now disgraced the legal profession.
Shouldn’t he or she would have known better?

SEVERAL more suspects, including a magistrate, are expected to be arrested this year in connection with an ongoing police probe on the misappropriation of Madang’s treasury funds, police say.
Northern Region police commander assistant commissioner for police (ACP) Peter Guinness said investigators would be sent to Madang to resume the probe once operating funds were available in coming weeks.
“There will be several more arrests of provincial treasury officers,” he said.
“We have identified at least six suspects.
“Two have been arrested and charged while action on another four is pending.”
ACP Guinness said investigators would not only focus on the Madang treasury fraud investigation because “there are also other outstanding issues that need to be investigated into the fraud.
“There are massive frauds involved, so that means that investigators will have to spend more time in Madang to investigate those cases, deal with the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” he said.
“This includes at least one magistrate and a warrant of arrest was issued.
“Unfortunately, the magistrate has gone into hiding.”
ACP Guinness said police would continue to look for the magistrate to have him arrested and charged.
In another case, the National Court in Madang has ordered Madang police to provide statements on the death of a remandee at Jomba police cell recently.
He said the National Court wanted the statement to be presented in court to verify circumstances surrounding the death.
