Cops charged with raping 18-year-old girl in police station

PORT MORESBY: Anywhere in the world, civilised communities depend on their police force to ensure public safety and enforce the rule of law.

However, when those individuals (policemen) tasked with law enforcement powers go rogue, these bad apples tarnish the image of the force and their country.

A senior sergeant and a constable were charged with raping an 18-year-old girl in a police station! And one of them was also charged with possessing pornographic materials.

PNG Cyber Monitor produces below the details of the alleged despicable acts of the two cops as reported by The National:

Officers charged with rape

By GIDEON KINDIWAA SENIOR sergeant and a constable were charged with raping an 18-year-old girl at the Hohola police station between Jan 10 and 12.
The duo allegedly raped the girl on different occasions while under their custody. They were also charged with possessing pornographic materials in the station in Port Moresby.
Senior Sgt Trepi and Leo Kambao were charged in the Waigani committal court yesterday.
Trepi was charged with one count of rape, one count of possessing pornographic materials and two counts of producing pornography.
Kambao was charged with one count rape.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar heard that the girl was detained at the police station on Jan 10 for allegedly stabbing another woman.
The women’s cell block was condemned and she held outside the cell when Kambao called her into his office at about 10pm and allegedly raped her.
On Jan 12, at about 10am, Trepi took her into his office and asked if she wanted to watch a video.
He allegedly played a pornographic video and asked her to have sex with him which she refused.
Trepi allegedly threatened her with a knife and raped her again.
Trepi was rearrested for producing and possessing pornography.
The duo’s defence lawyer filed written submissions that there was insufficient evidence to charge the policemen.
Police prosecutor Sgt Joseph Sangam then asked court for a month’s adjournment for him to rebut the submissions.
“The alleged offences included indictable offences such as rape as well as summary offences like possessing pornography which were committed simultaneously,”Sangam said.
“The summary offences were supposed to be heard at the Bororko district court, and that was probably the reason why the Boroko district court issued a warrant to arrest Trepi.
“I will have the case transferred to Boroko.”
Sangam told Bidar that the Boroko district court ordered Trepi to appear on July 18 (tomorrow).
Trepi’s lawyer then asked the court to deal with the indictable offences first and later the summary offences. Bidar said he did not have the information on the summary charges and that the matter was for the court registry to sort out.
“Trepi will have to attend two different courts, if that is the case,” he said, adjourning the hearing to Aug 15.
