Lawyer charged with murdering wife

PORT MORESBY: A lawyer was charged with murdering his wife in the Waigani committal court on Wednesday (July 17, 2019).

Robert Mai allegedly told police that his wife had sworn at his younger brother so he bashed her up.

Is that supposed to be a valid legal excuse for allegedly committing murder?

PNG Cyber Monitor reproduces below a report by The National on the case:

Lawyer faces murder charge

National
A LAWYER charged with murdering his wife has appeared before the Waigani Committal Court.
Lawyer Robert Mai, from Tari, Hela was alleged to have murdered his wife Ladonna Olonogo with the help of his family members James Mai, Tonny Tamiako, Hingijah Mai, James Mai and others at Gerehu in Port Moresby on July 2.
This was after Mai accused his wife of trying to stab him with a knife.
Mai, who is the principal of Robert Mai Lawyers, appeared before Magistrate Cosmas Bidar.
Bidar said police alleged that at the time of the crime James Mai and Tamiako went to Robert Mai’s residence at Gerehu at around 4pm and stayed there.
Mai and Olonogo arrived at 10pm.
“When the couple arrived home, Robert Mai allegedly alerted his relatives to lock the gate,” Bidar said.
“When Olonogo stepped out of the vehicle, the men allegedly attacked her with bush knives, iron bars and other weapons.
“As a result, the deceased sustained severe injuries on her head, back and on both legs,” he said.
“There were stab wounds on both thighs.” The police brief also alleged that the assault continued even after Olonogo had fallen unconscious to the ground.
“A relative of Olonogo allegedly reported the attack to a Hohola police unit that was parked at the Gerehu 24 market and led the
police with other relatives to Mai’s house.
“Upon arrival at Mai’s house, it was alleged police with Olonogo’s relatives saw her body on the ground.
“When police enquired about the incident, Robert Mai allegedly told police and Olonogo’s family members that it was an internal family issue where the deceased had sworn at his (Mai’s) younger brother so he (Mai) bashed her up.
“A relative of Olonogo insisted that Mai was lying, so police called for backup from the Gerehu police station.
“They entered the residence and rushed Olonogo to Port Moresby General Hospital.
“While undergoing medical treatment, Olonogo died two days later.”
Bidar adjourned the case to Aug 20 for mention and to allow time for police to conduct investigations.
