80 suspects in killing identified
POLICE in Enga have identified more than 80 suspects involved in the killing of six people in Mt Kare last week.
Acting provincial police commander Sr Insp Epenes Nili told The National police were on the lookout for the suspects and that they were all from Hela.
“We are still investigating why so many people were travelling in the bush, killing so many people,” he said. “There must be a reason and the dead were all also from Hela.”
Sr Insp Nili said the decomposed remains recovered were sent to Mt Kare for post-mortems.
“More information on the killings may be available after the post-mortems,” he said. Mt Kare, bordering Enga and Hela, is only accessible by helicopter.
Among those killed were men, woman and children whose bodies were recovered in Pinu River.
The victims, from Pori LLG were on their way home from Porgera via Mt Kare, a traditional route, when they were attacked.
Locals have posted in Facebook blaming unrest and killing on ongoing feuds between two major tribal warlords.
Similar “mass murders” also occurred this year in Tari Pori’s Karida village in Hela.
