By SYLVESTER WEMURUPOLICE arrested four armed robbery suspects within 24 hours after they allegedly staged a pay roll raid at Waira Plumbing in Kokopo’s Takubar Industrial Estate on Friday.
East New Britian police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali said one of the suspects was injured during a swift operation on their hideout in Seaview Banana Block settlement near Kokopo town.
He said the arrests were made following successful intelligence gathering by investigators.
“Three of them are now in a lock-up and they will be charged with armed robbery. The injured suspect will be charged after he recovers from his injuries in St Mary’s Hospital.”
Tabali said the alleged robbers had information that the employees were getting their pay and planned their strike.
“We are still investigating to determine how much money the robbers got away,” he added.
Tabali said: “Police are now on full alert for Christmas and New Year law enforcement operations. So, whoever is thinking of committing any crime should think twice. Celebrate this festive season safely with your families at home. Christmas is a time for everyone to celebrate peacefully with their loved ones, instead of hurting others.”
In another case, Tabali said police had captured three of the six prisoners who escaped from Kerevat Prison last week.
“My advice to families, friends or communities of the fugitives to help surrender them,” he said.
