Governor Yama charged with five counts of criminal offences

PORT MORESBY: Police on Thursday (March 5, 2020) arrested, charged and released Madang governor Peter Yama.
Madang commander Acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang told the media that Yama was charged with one count of bribery, one count of perverting the course of justice, one count of conspiring to commit crime, one count of abuse of office and one count of official corruption.
He added that Yama was released on K6,000 bail and was expected to appear in court within a week.

By SYLVESTER WEMURUMADANG Governor Peter Yama presented himself at the Madang Police Station yesterday to be interviewed by police over allegations made against him.
He was later charged with one count of bribery, one count of perverting the course of justice, one count of conspiring to commit a crime, one count of abuse of office and one count of official corruption.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said after Yama was charged, he was detained for a while in the cell at Jomba Police Station, then released on a K6,000 bail.
He is expected to appear in court next week.
Supt Rubiang reminded the people that police were only following proper procedures.
“I want to inform the people of Madang province that the police are doing their constitutional duty and Yama is innocent until proven guilty by the court.”
Supt Rubiang praised Yama for the way he conducted himself yesterday.
“It is the way all leaders should work with the police when they have allegations made against them,” he said.
“I want the people of Madang to respect the work of the police because they are doing their job like they arrest citizens of Madang.”
Police officers from Morobe were in Madang yesterday to provide security support. People gathered around the police station when Yama went inside.
