Lucky Tommy Baker gives police the slip again, bodyguard nabbed
PORT MORESBY: Luck is still with the elusive Tommy Maeva Baker, Papau New Guinea (PNG) police’s most wanted man.
Baker gave the police the slip in Milne Bay’s Alotau on Sunday (March 1, 21020) but his bodyguard and henchman was nabbed.
Baker, who has been a fugitive since 2013, is wanted for a string of murders, armed robberies and piracy.
Two other Baker gang members were also killed in a shootout with police on Feb 15, 2020.

Southern commander Asst Comm (ACP) John Maru said Baker’s two gang members were shot dead on Feb 15 in a gun battle after a robbery in Huhu.
Baker has been on the run since 2013 and is wanted for a string of murders, armed robberies and piracy. ACP Maru said Baker had gone to his wife’s house in Alotau town with his bodyguard.
“After beating up his wife, Baker left for a drink” he said.
“When policemen arrived at the scene at about 5pm, Baker’s bodyguard tried to flee but police shot him on his left thigh.”
Apart from escorting Baker around Alotau town, the bodyguard also participated in armed robberies.
In the Feb 15 deadly encounter with police, ACP Maru said Baker’s two accomplices, Hermoni Waks and Toto, were trapped in a confrontation.
Waks and Toto had pulled off an armed robbery in Kilakilana village on Jan 18 and another on Feb 10 in Palawatu village, escaping with valuables and cash.
“The duo then staged another armed robbery in Palawatu village on Feb 15 but their luck ran out.
“Police were alerted, rushed to the village and both were shot dead in an exchange of fire,” he said, adding that police recovered two Winchester long-barrel rifles.
Baker, who had been evading police since 2013, has had a free will in carrying out armed robberies in Central, Northern and Southern.
He had escaped twice from prison.
The first escape was from Giligili Prison and the second from Port Moresby’s Bomana Prison in Port Moresby.
Former Milne Bay acting commander George Bayagau was reported telling the media that Baker was linked to certain politicians, bureaucrats and police officers.
“We are not ruling out such reports about police officers and politicians being behind Baker’s illegal activities,” Bayagau was quoted as saying.
Bayagau also told the media that “there were rumours politicians in the province had sought Baker and his gang’s assistance to intimidate voters to vote for them in the 2017 general election”.
There were also reports that policemen in the provincial command were tipping him off to escape from mobile squad members brought in from Port Moresby to hunt him down, Bayagau said.
