MP, wife back in court
KIRIWINA-Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa and wife Rachael Tomuriesa are back in court over the fraud-related charges struck out last year because police had not completed investigations.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Tracy Ganaii yesterday adjourned the matter to April 16.
Douglas, 51, of Losuia village, Kiriwina-Goodenough District, Milne Bay, is facing one count each of false pretence, misappropriation and money laundering.
Rachael, 52, of Kolonoboi village, Namatanai in New Ireland is defending herself against one count of misappropriation and one for money laundering.
Police alleged that the two colluded with former South Fly MP Sali Subam, district official Andrew Marubu and others to apply to their own use, and the use of Quick Span Building Systems Ltd, a sum of K6 million belonging to the South Fly District.
Quick Span Building Systems Ltd was owned and operated by Tomuriesa before he was elected MP in 2012.
The Finance Department had allocated K6 million to South Fly district for the construction of homes for health workers.
But it was allegedly changed during a Joint District Planning and Budget Priority Committee meeting in November 2011 to use the money for another project.
The cheque was deposited into the district treasury account at BSP Daru on Nov 24, 2011.
The company was awarded the contract for the new project on March 30, 2012.
A complaint was lodged by former South Fly MP, the late Aide Ganasi and former Chief Secretary, the late Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc at the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate on July 24, 2013.
Douglas and Rachael Tomuriesa were arrested and charged with the same charges.
But their cases were struck out last year because police failed to present their file to the court within the allowed time.
The two were re-arrested on Feb 28 after police finally managed to complete their case against them.
They have been released on K3,000 bail each.
