THE Vanimo district court last week issued a warrant of arrest for a policeman who allegedly killed a murder suspect in police custody in West Sepik on July 25.
First Constable Kelly Vavena, 38, from Warapu village, Aitape, West Sepik, is charged with shooting Jonathan Alai So-ou, 29, seven times in both legs in Aitape.
Vavena is now on the run after conning cell guards at the Vanimo police station to release him to get a lawyer from the Public Solicitor’s Office.
Senior provincial magistrate Sasa Inkung said yesterday that according to police investigations, Vavena, along with three other policemen, went to the Aitape police station and demanded to bring out So-ou who was in custody for the death of a retired public servant Daniel Maiyu.
He was then taken out to a vehicle and an argument broke out between Vavena and So-ou. Vavena, who was armed with a police issued semi-automatic firearm shot late So-ou in both legs. They then drove back to the police station and locked up So-ou who bled to death.
Vavena was arrested and charged with murder by policemen from Vanimo who were deployed to Aitape to investigate the killing due to a public outcry.
On May 17, the police prosecutor called out for Vavena but he was not present.
The prosecutor then submitted for an arrest warrant which Inkung granted.
Inkung then fixed next hearing on Friday.
