A MAN who sexually assaulted a minor has been jailed for 10 years with hard labour by the National Court in Lae.
Justice Lawrence Kangwia handed down the sentence on Kasi Kasi Ronny, 18, based on the evidence provided on the medical certificate.
Ronny also pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual penetration.
The court heard that on June 11, 2020, as the girl was trying to leave the house with a younger sibling, Ronny grabbed her and sexually assaulted her.
She later reported the matter to her mother who took her to the hospital for a medical check.
The defence lawyer from the Public Solicitor’s Office submitted that Ronny had pleaded guilty early, acted alone, co-operated with police, was a first-time offender and expressed remorse.
But the State prosecutor said it was “a serious case of sexual penetration by a close acquaintance on a child under 12”.
“He brought disrepute to the family.
“He is solely to be blamed for the consequences brought upon the victim and himself,” he said.
The State prosecutor argued that the offence “amounted to significant abuse and violation of the innocence of a child of tender years”.
“He abused a position of trust by association and acquaintance with the victim’s family,” he said.
The court also heard that Ronny had on previous occasions sexually assaulted the girl, that he was a repeat offender.
