A THIEF picked on the wrong man to steal a phone from yesterday – and got punished for it.
National rugby league player Stargroth Amean was driving his car towards the Four-Mile roundabout and stopped to give way to oncoming traffic, when the man opened the car door, snatched his phone and fled.
The PNG Kumul and Port Moresby Vipers player chased the man for about 200m and brought him down.
Amean, who normally plays fullback for the national team, had to swerve and sprint through the traffic to catch the thief and recover his phone.
Attempts to get a comment from Amean yesterday were unsuccessful.
But, according to police on the National Capital District/Central command Facebook page, motorists and bystanders, after watching the drama unfold, realised it was Amean who was chasing the thief.
They then turned on the man and beat him up before he was taken to the Boroko police station.
