SECURITY at Alotau’s Giligili prison, Milne Bay, has been stepped up after intelligence reports were received of a possible attack on the prison in the next 10 days.
Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis told The National yesterday that while he would not comment on the reports, “the prison is providing security to its prisoners and the facilities”.
“We have no grudges against members of the (Tommy) Baker gang who are in hiding,” he said.
According to sources in Alotau, there are 25 members of Baker’s gang in prison, plus 20 others on remand and five convicted prisoners.
The prison is also where Baker’s mother Lorinda Kauma, his aunt Agnes Miro, 67, and uncle Maya Magumagu, 51, are detained.
On May 4, 12 men believed to be from Baker gang were arrested.
Since then, prison authorities had been on high alert and beefed up security.
Officials told The National that members of the task force conducted a raid in the prison compound and confiscated five mobile phones and sim cards which had been used to keep in touch with the gang members on the outside.
“We are on high alert and will remain like this until we are sure the threat level is down,” the source added.
Police continue to provide extra security by patrolling the surrounding areas of the prison.
