A 29-YEAR-OLD man was charged in the Wagani Committal Court with the murder of his two sons, aged two and five, in a rented house in Morata on April 27.
Magistrate Tracy Ganaii yesterday read the murder charges to Dave Benjamin Gau and adjourned hearing to June 10 after prosecutor Snr Const Regina Kilip asked for a month’s adjournment for the police to complete its investigation file for the court.
Gau, from Wosera-Gawi’s Tigawi Niura village, East Sepik, was remanded.
He was alleged to have stabbed Shane, five, and Ethan, two, to death when his wife stepped out of the house after a domestic argument.
Police statement of facts stated that Gau and Elsie Rentia were married in 2014 when Rentia was expecting Shane.
They were together, but separated in May 2015, and got back together in December 2015.
In 2016, they separated again and Rentia decided to live with her parents till 2017.
They got back together in 2018, because Rentia was expecting Ethan at that time.
In June 2019, Gau told them to leave the house, Rentia took her sons to live with her parents.
They re-united in January after Gau’s mother passed away and he asked Rentia to return to help his mother’s funeral and burial.
Gau, his wife and children then lived together in the rented house in Morata.
Rentia thought Gau had changed but he never did.
He would get angry over little things and when he argued with Rentia, he would include the two boys in their argument.
Gau went to work on April 27, while Rentia stayed home with the two boys.
Gau works with Digitech while Rentia works with the US Embassy.
Rentia, after preparing breakfast for her boys, was trying to reply to her emails but the laptop was faulty, so she used her mobile phone.
Whilst on the phone, Gau texted her on WhatsApp accusing her of hiding things.
They exchanged messages, arguing and explaining themselves.
Gau was disturbed so he went home early.
He went straight into the bedroom and started blaming his sons for damaging his laptop charger, then smashed it with his hands.
Rentia walked out of the room with the two boys while Gau apologised and said he would not be with the boys when they grow older.
He then signalled Shane to go back into the room to clean the mess, but Rentia told him to leave it and told Gau to pack up and leave.
Rentia went into the room and cleaned it and Shane was there playing in the room.
She went outside with Ethan.
She heard something fell and peeped into the room and she saw Gau about to smash her company laptop.
She took Ethan and walked past two other rooms as she called her workmates for assistance.
Gau then attacked Shane in the room which she was unaware.
She was still on the phone when Ethan wanted to go down and was struggling, so she let him go and he ran to the room to Gau and Shane.
Gau got the knife and stabbed Ethan just as Rentia ended her conversation and went after Ethan to check on him.
The door was open and she saw Gau stabbing Ethan. He was lying next to Shane who was already dead.
She screamed and her neighbour Florence Maraia ran to her.
Florence also saw Gau still stabbing the boys.
Other tenants fronted up at their room door and approached Gau who had a bayonet knife and was trying to stab himself.
They managed to disarm him.
The two boys were lying in a pool of blood. Ethan was still breathing, so they rushed him to the hospital but he died on the way.
Police and an ambulance arrived where Gau was taken to Waigani police station and the boys were taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital then to the Funeral Home.
Gau was then transferred to Boroko police station for medical assessment on his mental state but that was delayed.
He was later formally arrested and charged with two counts of murder.
