SEVENTEEN prisoners, including one on death row and two jailed for life, escaped from Bomana prison yesterday in the middle of a National Repentance Day celebration.
Correctional Service Commissioner Stephen Pokanis said one of the two on life imprisonment had been recaptured. He appealed to the 16 on the run to turn themselves in at the nearest police station immediately.
Of the 17, 13 were on remand, one was a convicted prisoner, one on death row and two on life imprisonment.
The breakout happened between noon and 1pm at the country’s biggest maximum prison.
The warder on duty was not at his post at the time of the escape, Comm Pokanis said.
“This is pure negligence and we will be conducting our internal investigation to determine what occurred,” he said.
Comm Pokanis also told The National last night that a bolt cutter was used to cut open the fence, which was given to the prisoners by a warder.
Prison guards were observing the National Repentance Day when the 17 escaped. A prison guard raised the alarm when he noticed the damaged fence.
Police Commissioner David Manning said a police team was assisting the prison officers in looking for the 16 escapees.
“We are working with the CS officers and ensuring that we return the prisoners to prison,” he said.
Commissioners Manning and Pokanis warned family members that it was an offence to harbour escapees.
The man on death among the escapees is Emex Goasa.
The two on life imprisonment are Russell Tom and Saku Dove.
Dove, 30, was recaptured in Central yesterday.
He was sentenced two weeks ago by Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika for killing two men he had accused of practising sorcery.
The convicted prisoner on the run is Charlton Eric.
The 13 on remand are Nathan Epe, Berry Karulaka, Bonny Walken, Henry Rodney Haoda, Brain Darius, Honiara Amenai, Walter Able, Asigau Jack Rakatani, Junior Paul, Max Meakoro Avia, Joel Ruahana Taiveri, Joseph Samuel and Lalai Numai.
Tom, 27, facing life imprisonment had killed his cousin brother at the Koki Fish market on June 25, 2018.
Correctional Services Minister Win Bakri Daki who visited Bomana prison yesterday appealed to the prisoners to give themselves up.
The prison population at Bomana is 730. There are 20 prison officers on duty at any given time.
