A LEADERSHIP tribunal looking into allegations of misconduct in office by Bulolo MP Sam Basil will resume next month because two panel members of the tribunal are also members of another tribunal which is sitting this month.
Tribunal chairman Justice Allen David said due to the ongoing tribunal of Telefomin MP Solan Mirisim where tribunal members, magistrates Mark Selefkariu and Josephine Kilage also sat, the Basil tribunal would be adjourned to Sept 3.
Basil’s lawyer Greg Sheppard, of Young and Williams Lawyers, told the tribunal about the status of the Mirisim tribunal.
“I’m involved in that (Mirisim) tribunal and its next sitting is on the 16th (of August),” Sheppard said.
“So, on Aug 16 the leader involved in that tribunal will make a decision in connection with the evidence he wishes to give.
“So I don’t expect that would be a sitting that would extend beyond Aug 18, the very longest.
“But, a clear run is always better in the interest of justice and if we aim for the beginning of September, we might be able to achieve that.”
Public Prosecutor Pondros Kaluwin had no objections.
Justice David said this was a rare situation where the same magistrates in one tribunal were involved in another tribunal, saying that it would be best to adjourn Basil’s tribunal to next month.
“If we start in the first week of September, we can take the statement of reasons or do the formalities like plea to the charges,” he said.
