THREE murder cases occurred in different parts of Morobe over the last two weeks, police says.
Two cases were reported two weeks ago in Markham and Menyamya and the latest one was in Kabwum, in which an elderly man suspected of sorcery-related killings, was murdered last week.
Morobe police commander Supt Jacob Singura and Morobe rural commander Chief Insp John Daviaga described the Kabwum murder as scary.
He said the suspect was a young adult, who for some reason, decided to live on his own in the bush for two years.
“After being informed over time for suspected sorcery killings in the village, he approached the victim early in the morning last Monday and chopped the victim’s head off,” Chief Insp Daviaga said.
He said the head was separated from the body and knife wounds were seen on the body, hands and legs.
During police interview, it was revealed by the suspect that he had killed his victim because the victim had caused many deaths in the village through sorcery.
The suspect was arrested and taken to Lae and remains in police custody. Police will lay charges this week.
In the Menyamya case two weeks ago, a man was chopped to death over land dispute.
Nine suspects had been arrested in relation to the murder and are now in the Bulolo cell with investigations going on. Charges are expected to be laid later.
Chief Insp Daviaga said the victim was a young adult from Akuange village in Menyamya.
In the Markham murder, nine suspects were detained by police in the Mutzing cell after a young man was found dead beside a river bank.
Police believe the person was killed elsewhere and dumped there as cover up.
Investigations are continuing and police believe more arrests would be made in the coming weeks in connection with the murder at Zumangurun village in the Umi-Atzera local level government area in Markham.
In a separate police report, a stepfather at Umi is in police custody after he was alleged to have sexually touched and penetrated his 15-year-old daughter, a grade seven student this year.
Investigations are continuing.
