AN elderly East New Britain man suspected of practising sorcery and causing the death of another man was killed in cold blood in Rabaul on Tuesday, police say.
Police said the incident occurred on Tuesday at Raluan number one in the Balanataman local level government (LLG) area of Rabaul. Provincial police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali said the deceased, Peter Liligur, from Malaguna number three, also in the same LLG area, was killed after relatives of a man from Kuraip village who died early last week suspected Liligur of causing the death of their relative by parctising sorcery.
They retaliated by going to Liligur’s house and attacking him.
Police claimed that at about 9.30pm at least 10 youths from Kuraip village walked to Raluan number one armed with bush knives.
They all wore masks.
Liligur was with his children.
They destroyed all the solar lights and then attacked him.
Police claimed Liligur’s head was chopped off.
Chief Insp Tabali said the youths then headed to Liligur’s brother’s house and attacked the ward member for Raluan number one.
He sustained extensive injuries and was admitted to the Nonga-base Hospital.
Chief Insp Tabali said Liligur’s body was at the hospital morgue waiting for police to complete investigation.
“I want to make an appeal to the public in ENB not to take the law into your own hands if you suspected someone of practising sorcery,” he said.
“You must report the matter to police so we can bring the suspect in for questioning instaed of taking law into your own hands.”
