A 24-YEAR-OLD man charged with trying to behead his stepmother with a bush knife is asking for bail on grounds that the allegations are false.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Danny Wakikura yesterday fixed Wednesday to decide on Poibal Mathias’ bail application.
Mathias, who is from Chimbu’s Gumine, said he was entitled to bail under the Constitution because “a man is innocent until proven guilty”.
Mathias, through his lawyer, asked Magistrate Wakikura that he be granted a K600 bail with his guarantors to chip in K200 each, for a bail amount of K1, 000.
Mathias applied for bail on the grounds that he was innocent and that he had two reputable guarantors, a pastor and a community leader.
Police Prosecutor Paul Dupi opposed bail because the alleged offence “consisted of serious assault, a threat of violence and an offensive weapon being used”. “Mathias is ‘likely’ to recommit the offence against the stepmother if he is not in custody because the situation that triggered the offence has not been solved,” he said.
“If he is let out, we believe he might commit the offence again so we are saying that Mathias remains remanded.”
Police alleged that on June 25, at around 5.30pm, Mathias arrived home from work and forced his stepmother to vacate her property in Mangomin, East Boroko, in Port Moresby.
The stepmother is the third wife of late policeman Michael Mathias Palu while Mathias is regarded as her adopted son whom she accommodates in her residence.
Mathias had allegedly threatened to behead her if she failed to comply.
She tried to talk with him, but he took a knife and swung at her head but she lifted her left hand in defence and was slashed.
