PORT MORESBY: The Milamala Yam Festival is held from June to August in Papua New Guinea’s Milne Bay.

It is the time of the year when the Trobriand's harvest their yam. It starts with a procession of men carrying the newly harvested yam from the garden storage hut to the village yam houses, while the women ahead sing and dance.

THE Yam Festival of Trobriand Islands, also known as the Islands of Love, in Milne Bay, was launched last week by the Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture Isi Henry Leonard.
Also known as the Kiriwina culture show, the event will be held annually in July when the islanders’ staple diet, yam, is harvested.
National Cultural Commission executive director Steven Kilanda said the festival would be in the NCC’s annual events calendar.
He was grateful to tourism chief executive officer Eric Uvovo and his management team for their continuous support of the NCC’s endeavours to develop arts and culture industry in the country.
Kilanda commended the Milne Bay government for its foresight and willingness to partner the NCC in the development of arts and culture in the province.
The launch, last Wednesday, was witnessed by Uvovo, Kilanda and Milne Bay administration officials.
