TWO people from Goilala, Central were slashed to death yesterday morning in Moresby North East’s 6-Mile by a group from Hela’s Koroba-Kopiago over a stolen mobile phone, according to police.
National Capital District acting Met Supt Christopher Tamari said the incident was “very unfortunate as innocent lives were taken”.
He told The National that the incident started when a man from Chimbu stole a mobile phone from a West Papuan man at 6-Mile on Saturday.
“The West Papuan guy resides in the same community as the Korobas at 6-Mile,” Met Supt Christopher Tamari said.
“He went back and told the Korobas about the incident and they thought the stealing was done by the Goilalas so they came to the Goilala community, which is also at 6-Mile, next to Monier company.”
Met Supt Tamari said the Korobas asked the Goilalas to return the phone.
“But the Goilala’s denied it because he wasn’t one of them,” he said.
“The Korobas came back armed with bush knives, bows and arrows and slashed an (innocent) elderly Goilala woman and murdered an elderly guy (Goilala) who was selling betel nuts.
“Two innocent lives were taken over a pickpocketing of a phone by somebody who is not even from Goilala, he was from Chimbu.”
Met Supt Tamari said they could have established the facts and got the phone back instead of killing innocent people.
He also noted that the Goilalas were trying to retaliate to take the Chimbu guy to the police.
“It’s a police matter and our detectives are on it now (investigating).
“They have interviewed the Goilala community and have come up with the name of the pickpocketer, who is not a Goilala,” he said.
“They will also go into the Hela camp. Once we establish these things, the rule of law will take place, we will effect arrest.
“And I call for peace and calm among the Tari and Goilala community at 6-Mile, not to further take law into their hands but refrain and let the rule of law take its course.”
Met Supt Tamari said such incidents “are sad and uncalled for”.
