THIRTEEN detainees took advantage of some unfinished work in the Bulolo police cell by a contractor and escaped on Saturday, Morobe police commander Supt Jacob Singura says.
“The duty officer on the day of the escape will be dealt with for negligence,” he said.
“We cannot blame the contractor for the incomplete job when duty officers are not doing their job honestly.”
Among the escapees are murder suspects, alleged rapists and a few accused of causing grievous bodily harm, Supt Singura said.
Police will be going to places and settlements where the escapees came from to warn their families and relatives against harbouring them.
In fact, Supt Singura said police would demand from those people to surrender the escapees to police.
He said the escape happened after the detainees were transferred to a cell block which was not fully completed to make way for remandees from Lae attending their National Court proceedings in Bulolo.
All remandees brought in from Lae to attend their cases in Bulolo are still there, he said.
Supt Singura said the contractor working in the cell block was laying bricks but didn’t quite reach the ceiling so covered the gap temporarily by nailing plywood over it.
He said the detainees kicked open the plywood and made their way out. “Many of those suspects reside at care centres and settlements,” he said.
“We will go into the care centres and settlements anytime this week where the escapees came from and demand the community leaders and the people there to surrender them.”
Supt Singura said police gave a 24-hour-ultimatum to the communities where the escapees came from to surrender them or police would take action.
The escape happened between 5.30pm and 6pm.
