POLICE yesterday charged 93 male students of a school in Wewak, East
Sepik with wilful damage, and released each on a K200 bail.
Provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli said they had to release them
yesterday because of the condition and capacity of the holding cells at the
Wewak police station.
The students from the Brandi Secondary Schools were locked up at the police
station on Monday for allegedly vandalising and stealing school properties.
They were allegedly upset after a routine check of their dormitories on
Saturday discovered that four of them had mobile phones, cigarettes and items
banned from the school. Initially police denied the Grade 9 and 11 students
bail.
School principal Anthony Boiefin had told The National that the students
damaged and ransacked school properties as well as threatening the deputy
principal (administration).
He said they also broke into the school’s canteen and helped themselves to the
food items.
Boiefin said the damage was quite extensive and the school was yet to know the
costs.
