A MAN who allegedly murdered and buried his wife and later raped his uncle’s wife was saved by police when villagers caught him trying to hide the body.
The villagers were about to execute him when police arrived in Madang’s Ato village on Wednesday.
Commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the man allegedly buried his wife in a pit near his house.
“The villagers did not know that he had murdered his wife but found out the same day when they found his uncle’s wife’s body which he threw into a creek some 110km the murder scene,” he said.
“The Madang criminal investigation department team led by the officer-in-charge Insp Steven Yalamu went to the scene and saved the murder suspect.
“The team also retrieved the bodies of the murdered women.
“After autopsies at Modilon Hospital, the bodies were claimed by relatives for proper burials.”
Acting Supt Rubiang said the murder suspect had been arrested and held in a police lockup pending investigations to determine the causes or motives for the murders.
He said through police investigation, the police would find out why the “murder cases are on the rise in Madang”.
“Five murder cases were reported in a month,” he said.
“Police are inadequately equipped with manpower, logistics and other equipment for better and effective policing.” Acting
Supt Rubiang said police needed radios for fast and effective communication. Madang police currently do not have such radios.
