POLICE are questioning a father over the stabbing to death of his sons, aged two and four, at their family home in Port Moresby.
Metropolitan Superintendent Gideon Ikumu said initial police investigations revealed that there was an argument between the parents before the boys were killed on Tuesday.
“(But) we are trying to piece together what happened in the lead-up to the killing of the two boys. The father is being interviewed, and is expected to be charged,” he said.
Residents of the Morata One suburb in Moresby Northwest were shocked by the incident.
The father is understood to be from East Sepik and the mother from Morobe.
Police said the parents got into an argument after the mother had returned home from work. She went out of the house after the argument, leaving the two boys with their father inside.
Police believe that was when the boys were stabbed with a knife on their backs and chests killing both instantly.
Police were also told that the father had to be restrained by some men when he tried to kill himself with the knife.
They immediately called the police.
“Waigani police, a mobile squad unit responded to the call for assistance,” a police spokesman said.
Neighbours described the bloody scene at the home, with the two boys lying side by side on their bed covered in their own blood.
Ikumu said the wife would be interviewed “to determine the cause and establish what actually happened to trigger such heinous act”.
“I am appealing to friends and relatives (of the family) to remain calm and allow police to investigate the crime,” he said.
