Drunkards attack doctor

PORT MORESBY: There is already a shortage of doctors in Papua New Guinea, especially in the rural interiors.

Yet, there are people who see it fit to attack, injure or kill doctors whose only duty is to save lives.

For Mt Hagen Hospital doctor Dr Sent Kuk, he is lucky to be still alive after one such senseless attack by drunkards.

A DOCTOR at the Mt Hagen Hospital was attacked by drunkards who also damaged his vehicle when he refused to give them a lift on Saturday.
Dr Sent Kuk was returning from dropping off his mechanic at around 10pm at Warakum when he was attacked.
Mt Hagen police commander Chief Inspector Jacob Kamiak could not be reached for comment.
But Western Highlands police rural zone commander Chief Insp David Kongua confirmed the incident.
Jiwaka’s Anglimp-South Waghi ward councillor Joseph Tip said the law and order situation was worsening in Mt Hagen.
“The attack on Dr Kuk in Warakum on Saturday is testimony to the deteriorating public safety,” he said.
Tip said Dr Kuk, who was his Kuli tribesman from Anglimp, was returning home when he was attacked by a group of drunkards.
“The drunkards stopped Kuk’s vehicle and ordered him to take them to the city.
“Dr Kuk could not comply because they were strangers and there were other people with him in the vehicle,” he said.
“They then punched and attacked Dr Kuk with knives, screwdrivers and objects.
“Dr Kuk sustained injuries to his hand, head and body.
“His vehicle was also damaged by the assailants at the junction.
“We were told that the assailants had been drinking throughout the day,” Tip said. “We know their identities and Ward Seven leaders and the police need to arrest them.”
He said Dr Kuk, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at the hospital, was a hardworking doctor who deserved public respect.
Tip said since the country was facing the Covid-19 pandemic, health workers were key people who should be supported.
“I do not know why the drunkards can attack a doctor like that,” he added.
