Two men arrested, charged with assaulting ex-police Sergeant

PORT MORESBY: Police have arrested and charged two men with assaulting a police station Sergeant who has been sacked for tying two drug suspects to a police vehicle in February.

The Sergeant had stripped the two men naked, tied them to a police vehicle and paraded them in public to shame them for the crime.

It was not the first time the Sergeant had meted out such a punishment on suspects and there was a public outcry after a picture of the incident was posted on social media Facebook.

The Sergeant was sacked after an internal inquiry but police also acted on those who assaulted the Sergeant for the incident.

Here are the details of the story as published by The National:

TWO people have been arrested and charged over the assault of a police officer in Menyamya, Morobe.
The officer, who is the Menyamya rural station commander, had tied two men to the hood of a police vehicle and drove to the station.
The men had allegedly been found with marijuana at a local market.
Acting Morobe police commander Chief Insp John Daviaga told The National that the arrest came after an investigation into the assault of the two suspects by the officer and subsequent assault of the officer by the people at Menyamya station.
The incident happened in February.
Chief Insp Daviaga said while the officer was being assaulted, the two suspects escaped.
He said three suspects allegedly involved in the assault of the station commander had been charged and detained while a fourth was still at large.
He said the station commander, who was taken to Lae for treatment, had also been suspended and was under investigation for his treatment of the two men found with marijuana.
He added that the officer’s firearm which was taken during the assault had been returned.
Chief Supt Daviaga condemned the humiliation of the suspects.
