PORT MORESBY: Police have managed to stop  a month-long tribal fight between Tapo and Kemefa tribes in Eastern Highlands;s Kainantu.

The fighting is over land disputes and locals claim at least 20 villagers have been killed and properties razed.

POLICE have managed to stop a fight between two tribes in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands, over a land dispute and are trying to hold peace talks among the members, an official says.
Kainantu town mayor Densa Yubiko said members of the police mobile squads from Lae, Port Moresby and Mt Hagen were sent to Kainantu to stop the fighting between members of the Tapo and Kemefa tribes.
The violence which began last month had resulted in loss of lives and properties.
The actual number of people dead could not be confirmed yesterday but locals put it at up to 20.
“(Police) have (brought) the situation under control (and are negotiating) for acease fire,” he said.
“At this stage, we do not know when a peace meeting would be held but we hope that it will be soon,” Yubiko said.
It was reported on Monday that some people had died and more than 200 homes razed.
