EIGHT policemen in Western are under investigation for their alleged involvement in a gang rape, damaging a police vehicle and a police station, South Fly acting commander Snr Insp Ewai Segi says.
“We are also conducting an internal investigation on the escape of three Indonesians from the Daru Police Station on April 3. The Indonesians were arrested for illegal entry and for illegally fishing in Papua New Guinea waters,” he said.
Snr Insp Segi said six policemen allegedly raped a 27-year-old woman on March 2, and two policemen were charged in the Daru District Court with damaging a police vehicle and station respectively.
He said that the six policemen allegedly abducted the woman at Samari settlement at about 9pm and took her to the back of the airport and allegedly raped her.
“A policeman is also appearing before the district court on charges of damaging a new police vehicle donated by the Western government,” he said.
“The accused is before the court with two other policemen.
“The policemen were accused of using the police vehicle to go on drinking sprees without the approval of their supervisor since March 9.
“On March 21, at about 8pm, they crashed the vehicle.”
Snr Insp Segi said another policeman was charged with damaging the Daru Police Station in February.
“The policeman was drunk and drove a police vehicle without his shift supervisor’s approval,” he said.
“When the policeman brought the vehicle to the station, he was ordered by his shift supervisor to ground the vehicle and not to drive it again.
“The policeman was angry and smashed the counter and the louvre blades of the police station’s windows.”
