POLICE and villagers along the coastline of Salamaua local level government in Huon Gulf, Morobe, have launched a hunt for a man-eating killer crocodile that claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl on Monday.
Grandfather and village pastor Saking Tangali said Giwic Bingo and her elder sister, grandmother and a relative were bathing in Budaim River in Busamang village at about 10am when the crocodile surfaced from under the water lilies and attacked them.
He said crocodile attacks were not common and there were only such attacks in the 1960s and 1980s that claimed the lives of a man and a woman.
“The attack on my granddaughter is unexpected and took us all by surprise since it was the first such attack in our area. The crocodiles usually go for chickens, pigs and dogs but not humans,” he added.
“My granddaughters were washing by the river banks and jumping into the river playing without realising the lurking danger.
“The beast just pounced on them while they were in the river. It grabbed Bingo but the elder nine-year-old girl managed to escape the jaws of the crocodile with scratch marks on her body.
“Bingo was taken under the water by the crocodile and there was not much the others could do. They were helpless and could only call for help.
“Men from the villages were alerted and a search was carried out but they could not find the crocodile,” he added.
Youths and men from other villagers were also called to help in the search and hunt the same day into the night and next day (Tuesday) in the morning when they found Bingo’s body at about 10am.
Salamaua Health Centre community health worker Lyna Bopi said only Bingo’s upper body from her ribs upwards to her head and left hand remained.
Ward 14 counsellor Reuben Elaing said the men were in the bushes, creeks, rivers and mangroves looking for the crocodile.
It is believed that it had went into hiding and will only emerge at night.
Rural police unit policemen from Lae were called in to help in the hunt for the killer crocodile.
