MADANG police have arrested a man who allegedly sexually assaulted his two stepdaughters aged six and nine.
The girls’ mother told police that her new husband had sexually assaulted her daughters on several occasions before he was caught in the act on Sunday.
She said her daughters were too scared to complain about the sexual assaults as her husband had threatened her daughters.
The mother told police that her husband begged her to withdraw her police report and that he would compensate her daughters.
“I turned down his offer because I want him to be charged and face the law,” she added.
“My daughters are from my first marriage and their father is from Western’s Tabubil.
“I trusted my husband because he promised to look after my daughters. I regret knowing him.”
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang also discouraged compensation and had instructed his investigators to charge the husband and let him prove his innocence in court.
“Sex crime in the province is on the rise. As reported earlier, there were more than 30 sex-related cases since January. This is not a good sign,” he said.
Supt Rubiang said most of the suspects in sexual assaults were relatives of the victims or someone who was close to them.
“I am happy that the mother had refused to settle the matter out of court. I will make sure that the case goes to court.”
The mother said: “I should have stayed single and look after my daughters.
“My advice to single mothers now is to choose a man wisely if you want to marry him after your divorce.
“Don’t trust a man if you have girls as you may end up regretting, like me.” Supt Rubiang called on the public to look after their children and not trust anyone.
Police reported that the husband on numerous occasions allegedly locked the girls in the room and touched their private parts and sexually penetrated them.
This was done when their mother was not around.
Police are awaiting medical reports before charging the husband.
