A 30-YEAR-OLD man was dragged out of his house and beaten to death by a mob in Daru town on Sunday night in what appears to be a sorcery killing, police say. “The mob had blamed the man for mysterious deaths in Western,” Daru police station commander Insp Soiwa Ricker said. Insp Ricker said the mob went to the man’s house in Samarai settlement and dragged him out of his house despite pleas for mercy from his family. “The mob kicked and assaulted him with fists, stones, iron rods and hard objects while dragging him on the hard and rough ground for about 30m to the main road at about 8pm,” he said. “Police stopped the attack and rushed the victim to the Daru General Hospital where he died at about 1am on Monday. “And I’m outraged by the mob-lynching of the man.  “Sorcery-related killing is unheard off in Daru town. “So all those people involved in the killing will be rounded up to face the law.” Insp Ricker said the deceased was from Kiwai Island in South Fly. “Some of the people in Daru began generating rumours that mysterious deaths were allegedly linked to the victim,” he said. “The rumours were that the victim always fled Daru to his village when a death occurs and would return after some weeks later after the mourning period. Last week, there was a death in Daru and rumours began to spread again, instigating hatred that led to a buildup of the frenzy mob that fled when police arrived. “Sorcery-related killing is unheard of in Daru town. “Killings usually are alcohol or drug-related. “We know all these suspects involved in this killing.”
