A MAN taken in for questioning over sea piracy and robbery cases was shot by police when he tried to jump from a police vehicle, Milne Bay police commander Supt Peter Barkie says.
He told The National that police had warned the man, believed to be part of wanted criminal Tommy Baker’s gang, a few times not to run away but he ignored them.
Police in Alotau were tipped off about the whereabouts of the 26-year-old man from Duau in Alotau who was allegedly among those involved in the burning down of the Water Police barracks on April 30.
“On Sunday, between 1pm and 2pm, police received a tip-off that the suspect had showed up at his home at Goilanai,” he said.
“Police raided the residence and arrested the suspect.
“Along the way (to the police station) the suspect made an attempt to escape. He was shot on the right leg. He is now at the Alotau General Hospital and will be charged upon discharge.”
Since 2019, 32 people with ties to the Baker’s gang have been arrested and charged, five have been shot and killed, three injured, and one surrendered himself to police.
Since April 30, police operations had been ongoing with the 60-day operation to end tomorrow.
Prime Minister James Marape told The National that the funding for the operations would be supported by the Government.
“I have asked Police Minister William Onglo and Police Commissioner David Manning to work on a submission not only for Alotau but for policing resources around the country,” Marape said
