THE mother, aunt and uncle of wanted criminal Tommy Baker have been released from the Giligili prison after being granted bail by the Alotau district court.
They face one count each of harbouring.
Baker’s mother Lorinda Kauma, 58, from the Dabora, Rabaraba local level government, aunt Agnes Miro, 67, and uncle Maya Magumagu, 51, were arrested on May 6 at the Musa settlement during a raid.
Milne Bay police commander Supt Peter Barkie said they were released on K1,000 each last week, with their guarantors paying K200 each.
The bail was granted at the Alotau District court by Magistrate Rebecca Kwayaila on the condition that they report to the court registry every week and not to leave the province.
Police Crimes director Chief Inspector Joel Simatab said the three were yet to be interviewed and slapped with further criminal charges.
“Police will await their appearance in their next court date to serve them their files and interviews,” he said.
“I am grateful that all other criminal chargers laid on other Baker gang members have been professionally handled with all their criminal files completed and will be served during the committal hearings.
“As advised during the start of the 60-day operation, the police special investigation team will ensure the Baker gang members are properly processed under our criminal justice system.”
When police interviewed her, Kauma said that after the April 30 shootout with police, Baker’s wife had used her phone to call him.
And after the call, Kauma disposed of the Sim card.
According to police, since October 3, 2018 when he escaped from custody, Baker had been taken care of by his mother assisted by his aunt and uncle. During that time, Baker had led a gang that caused havoc among residents in Alotau.
