PAPUA New Guinea kickboxing champion Rickson Yamo has been fined K1,000 in default three months jail for failing to follow lawful police instructions after a road accident in Port Moresby’s Boroko last August. Waigani Traffic Court Magistrate Paul Nii also suspended Yamo’s driving licence until next June 1.  Yamo must settle the fine within two weeks or be jailed. “Yamo, you are convicted with a non-custodial sentence which shall be compensated by a fine of K1,000,” Magistrate Nii said. “Why?  “Because the offence in which you are found guilty of carries a minimum penalty of K1,000 and the maximum of K5,000. “So I am imposing you the minimum penalty which shall be made payable to the Independent State of PNG within two weeks from the date of this order. “The reason why I have suspended your driving licence is because there are many reasons that many people are disobeying traffic rules. “When they are told to stop, they are not stopping, when they are given instructions and directions to follow, they are not following, they are not complying.” Magistrate Nii also ordered that Yamo’s (guarantor’s) surety be refunded and his K500 bail for the convicted charge be converted to pay part of his fine.  Magistrate Nii, on Monday, had dismissed Yamo’s charges of obstruction to traffic flow and driving without due care and attention, but convicted Yamo on the charge of failing to comply with lawful police instructions. On Aug 20, at about 9.30am, while approaching the 5-Mile Round-about, Yamo was pulled over by police on duty when traffic was slow. He was instructed by the police to go to the Boroko Police Station. However, Yamo drove away towards Bisini Parade to drop off his uncle who was attending a meeting before going to the station.
