POLICE shot dead two gold robbers and injured three others in a gun battle in Lae last weekend, Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban says.
Police have also seized four 5.56mm cartridges, two empty shells, a homemade staple pistol, a Winchester rifle, an air pistol, three buckshots, a bush knife and a military-issued hand grenade.
“We have informed the Papua New Guinea Defence Force and they will conduct an internal investigation to help police how the robbers got the grenade. General Election 2022 is around the corner and to see such a dangerous bomb in the possession of criminals is really a huge concern for the police,” Chief Insp Kunyanban said.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said that the suspects when pursued by the police, shot at police first.
The gunfight occurred between 10pm and 11pm on Saturday when about 10 men armed with guns arrived in Land Cruiser 10-seater vehicle at the main market where a gold buyer was located.
The suspects had earlier called the buyer pretending to be genuine gold sellers who wanted to sell their gold.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said when the suspects were allowed into the premises, they held up the gold buyer, staff and security guards at gun point and robbed them.
“The robbers then grabbed an undisclosed amount of money and about 100g of gold and fled in the vehicle, and a few escaped on foot.
“A security guard chased the robbers and alerted a police unit that was conducting normal crime-prevention patrol in the area. Police pursued the robbers in their vehicle towards Busu road.
“The robbers then opened fire at the policemen who returned fire, shooting dead two and injuring three others. Another three robbers were arrested at Bumbu’s 13A market near Chinatown. Some of the suspects are still at large and police investigation are still in progress,” he added.
Chief Insp Kunyanban said one of those shot dead was an alleged arm robber who had a case pending before the court and was out on bail.
A live grenade was found in his trouser pocket.
