NEW Ireland receives 240 domestic violence complaints annually with half
of the cases withdrawn by the victims for undisclosed reasons, a senior police
officer says.
Police Commander Chief Insp Felix Nebanat said the latest case was of a husband
who allegedly killed his wife with a golf club in a public place in Kavieng
town, however, no one intervened and the man used the broken shaft of a golf
club to stab his wife in the neck.
Chief Insp Nebanat said the woman was rushed to the Kavieng Provincial Hospital
but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The suspect was arrested while trying to escape to Kokopo by a section of the
Tomaringa mobile squad at West Coast Namatanai currently on deployment in
Namatanai.
The suspect will be charged with wilful murder while an accomplice will be
charged for helping him evade police. The incident occurred last Thursday in a
public area in the presence of many bystanders who Chief Insp Nebanat said
could have prevented the attack if they had intervened.
He said he had been promoting a positive and proactive approach among the
community to law and order issues.
Chief Insp Nebanat said people needed to take ownership of securing their
communities, especially the vulnerable groups such as women and children.
He said concerned citizens could report immediately situations and incidents or
band together to protect their fellow community members in need of protection
while waiting for police to attend to the scene.
Chief Insp Nebanat urged all stakeholders and partners, especially the
community development sector in the province to work together with the police
to address violence in communities.
