THREE young men appeared before the Goroka District Court on Friday accused of gang-raping a grade 10 girl at China Town in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, last month.
Suspects Kelesy Simon, 19, from Giwo village in Talasea, West New Britain; John Kua, 18, from Suai village in SinaSina-Yongomugl, Chimbu; and, Pala Linus, 20, of Lilofa village in Unggai-Bena, Eastern Highlands, allegedly raped the girl at China Town in North Goroka.
The incident took place on Sept 10 after the girl had an argument with her mother at home.
Fearing a beating from the mother, she ran away and was on her way to Red Kona section of Goroka town where her father lived.
However, at a section of China Town, Simon allegedly confronted her with a knife pointed at her chest, demanding items such as a phone.
She told him that she had nothing valuable. Kua joined in and they allegedly forcefully walked her towards a dark corner when Linus joined them.
According to court information, it was getting dark and Simon and his two accomplices forced her to the ground and took turns, Simon first, to rape her.
Before they finished, Simon allegedly raped her again and she asked them to walk her back to her mother’s house.
The next day the girl reported the incident to her mother.
She was taken to hospital where a medical examination confirmed the incident, according to the court information.
The incident was reported to police and the three young men were arrested.
The suspects, according to the information, admitted the offence and were charged with rape.
The case was adjourned to Oct 29 for a hearing and the three were remanded at Bihute jail near Goroka.
