TWO juvenile prisoners at the Buimo jail in Lae, Morobe, were shot dead, six recaptured and two escaped after a jail break on Sunday night, a prison official says.
Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis said the jail break occurred at around 10pm.
“Ten male juveniles removed the roofing iron of their dormitory and escaped by climbing onto the roof,” Pokanis said.
He said the juveniles then made their way through perimeter fences and tried to escape into the hinterland behind the jail.
According to Pokanis, duty officers at that time noticed what was going on and tried to recapture the prisoners.
“While attempting to recapture these escaping juveniles, two were shot and later died from wounds sustained, the other six were recaptured at that time while the other two managed to escape unhurt and are now at large,” he said.
Pokanis appealed to the two escapees to surrender as their lives would be in danger while on the run.
He urged parents and relatives of the escapees not to help or harbour them but work with police and Correctional Services to have them returned to jail.
Buimo jail commander Supt Michael Wundia said the duty officers had made several attempts to stop the escaping prisoners before they were fired upon.
“During the call by the duty officers for the escaping juveniles to surrender, only five surrendered while the others tried to escape when two were shot and wounded and later died,” Supt Wundia
said.
He said relatives of the two dead juveniles would be notified after necessary arrangements were in place.
“This was an unfortunate situation.
“To escape from such lawful custody and being shot resulting in death is not good.
“Refrain from doing such things and complete your term,” Supt Wundia urged the detainees.
He also urged the two juveniles at large to surrender.
Supt Wundia said prisoners at Buimo jail were treated fairly and accorded respect by Correction Service officers.
